PDF and Images: Turn PDF into JPG/PNG and Build a PDF from Pictures

Sometimes you need to pull pages out of a PDF as images — to drop into a deck or share in a chat. Other times it's the reverse: gather a dozen scans into one tidy document. These are mirror-image tasks, and each hides a couple of tricks where quality slips away. Here's both directions, step by step — no filler theory.

Why convert PDF to images and back

PDF and an image solve different problems, which is exactly why people keep converting between them. A PDF is a document container: it holds many pages, fonts, vector graphics and text you can search. JPG and PNG are single images: they display anywhere, paste and share easily, but any text inside them is just pixels.

That gives you two opposite scenarios:

  • PDF → image. You need to show a page where a PDF is awkward: drop a slide into a presentation, attach a preview to a post, send a single page to a chat where opening a document feels like a chore.
  • Image → PDF. You need to turn a stack of photos or scans into one document: send an ID "as a single file" to a bank, gather receipts into a report, file scanned contract pages in order.

The key rule

An image made from a PDF is a "photograph" of the page: the text inside it can no longer be searched or copied. And a PDF made from images is a "folder" of snapshots: each picture becomes its own page. Keep that in mind and you won't pick the wrong tool.

PDF → JPG/PNG: rendering pages

Turning a PDF into an image is called rendering (rasterizing). The software "draws" the page exactly as a human would see it and saves that snapshot as JPG or PNG. Text, tables, charts and embedded photos all merge into a single raster image — there are no separate layers anymore.

The most important setting here is DPI (dots per inch). It controls how finely the page is turned into pixels. The higher the DPI, the sharper the image and the bigger the file. The guideline is simple:

For most people, 150 DPI for screen and 300 DPI for print is all you need. Picking 600 "just in case" usually isn't worth it: the file balloons several times over and you won't see the difference on screen. If the PDF has multiple pages, each one becomes a separate image, and they're typically bundled into a single ZIP archive for easier downloading.

Text becomes pixels

After rendering you can't search or select text on the page — it's now an image. If an image to display is exactly what you want, great. If search or editing matters, keep the document as a PDF.

JPG or PNG: which to pick for a page

When you render a page, the converter asks for a format. The choice isn't cosmetic: it affects both sharpness and weight. The rule is short — look at what dominates the page.

JPG compresses with loss and works beautifully with photographs and smooth color transitions. A magazine spread, a scanned photo album, a glossy brochure — pick JPG: the file stays compact and your eye barely notices the loss.

PNG compresses losslessly and never smears sharp edges. For pages with text, tables, diagrams and thin lines this matters: JPG leaves a fuzzy "halo" around letters and lines, while PNG keeps them crisp. PNG also handles transparency if you need to drop the page background.

Not sure? Render both versions and compare. For a document of screenshots and text, PDF → PNG almost always wins; for a colorful page of photos, go with PDF → JPG.

Extracting embedded images from a PDF

Here's a common mix-up. "Turn a PDF into images" and "pull the images out of a PDF" are not the same thing.

  • Rendering a page takes a snapshot of the whole page — text, borders, background and all. You set the resolution (via DPI).
  • Extracting images pulls out only the embedded pictures — the ones the designer placed into the document — in their original form and resolution. Text and layout are not kept.

When do you need which? If you want the page "as it looks," render it. If a report contains a high-resolution photo you want on its own, without borders and captions, extract it. Extraction often gives a sharper picture than rendering, because it returns the original rather than a re-shot copy.

Tip

Couldn't find the picture you wanted among the extracted files? It may not be a raster image in the PDF but vector graphics (a logo, a chart). Those are easier to get by rendering the right page to PNG.

Building a PDF from pictures and scans

The reverse task is to take several images and glue them into one document. This is a lifesaver when you need to send things "as a single file": scattered JPGs are easy to lose, while a single PDF arrives whole and opens the same way for everyone.

The principle is simple: each picture becomes one page, and the page order follows the upload order. So two things decide everything.

Upload images in order

Drag your photos or scans into JPG → PDF or PNG → PDF. Upload order = page order, so line them up correctly from the start.

Check the orientation

A shot taken vertically shouldn't land on its side. A good converter reads the EXIF orientation tag and rotates the frame to match what you see in your gallery.

Get a single document. JPEG is embedded directly, with no re-compression — the photo quality stays exactly as it was.

The converter usually sizes each page automatically — based on the image's dimensions and its DPI. For instance, a 4032×3024-pixel photo at 300 DPI yields a page roughly 13.4×10 inches — a bit larger than A4. The higher the DPI you set, the smaller (and denser) the page from the same shot. If all your images share a format (A4 scans), the document comes out even; if they're mixed, the pages will differ in size — and that's perfectly fine.

Scanning to PDF from your phone

The most common source of "PDF from pictures" today is the phone. Built-in scanners (in Files on iPhone, in Google Drive, in Notes) capture a document with the camera, automatically crop the edges, fix the perspective and save the result straight to PDF — several sheets in one file.

Sometimes, though, the phone hands you separate JPGs instead of a PDF — for example, if you simply photographed the pages. The script is the same: upload the shots to a JPG → PDF converter, arrange them in order and build the document. Before merging, it's worth cropping out stray background and checking that every sheet is rotated the same way.

Quality and size: how not to miss

In both directions the trade-off is the same: sharpness versus file weight. A few pointers so you don't have to redo anything.

  • Rendering a PDF to an image? Don't crank the DPI for no reason. 150 for screen, 300 for print — that covers 90% of cases. Save 600 DPI for archives and large-format printing.
  • A page full of text? Pick PNG, or a fuzzy halo of JPG artifacts will appear around the letters — especially noticeable on screenshots.
  • Building a PDF from photos? Don't shrink the shots beforehand — let the converter embed them without re-compression. If the final PDF comes out too heavy, you can always compress it separately.
  • Need searchable text? An image won't keep it. Either leave the PDF as is, or run it through OCR.

For viewing on screen and online, 150 DPI is plenty. For printing, use 300 DPI. 72 DPI is only for tiny thumbnails, and 600 DPI is for archiving or large formats. The higher the DPI, the sharper the image and the heavier the file.
