EPS for Print: How Not to Ruin Your Artwork

The logo looked perfect on screen, but the print shop returned a business card with washed-out colors, a thin white line along the edge, and a font that shifted. Sound familiar? Print plays by its own rules. Let's go point by point through what to check in an EPS artwork so it prints exactly as intended.

Why printers love EPS

EPS has one quality that kept it in print shops for decades: it's vector. It describes graphics mathematically, so it prints perfectly sharp at any size — on a business card or on a banner. No jagged "stairs" on letters and outlines.

The second reason is reliability in the print pipeline. EPS speaks PostScript, which print hardware understood for decades. Drop a chunk of graphics into a layout and you can trust it'll come out the way it looked on screen. For more on how the format works, see "What is EPS".

Understand this up front

EPS alone doesn't guarantee a good print. Vector sharpness is only half the story. The rest is correct color (CMYK), a margin for trimming (bleed) and predictable text (outlines). These three things are where artworks most often go wrong.

CMYK vs RGB: the big color trap

A screen glows and mixes RGB (red, green, blue). Print lays ink on paper and works in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). These are two fundamentally different systems, and some bright screen colors are simply unreachable in ink.

What happens in practice: a vivid "electric" blue or an acid green from the screen becomes noticeably duller in print. If you convert the artwork to CMYK only after sign-off, the client is surprised by the "wrong" color. So the golden rule is to work in CMYK from the start and check how the key brand colors look.

A classic mistake

Downloaded an EPS logo from the internet — it's almost certainly RGB. Don't send such a file to print as-is: convert to CMYK and verify the brand colors. Saturated blues, purples and greens fade the hardest.

Bleed and the trim line

Bleed is a margin of background that extends past the final trim line, usually by 2–5 mm. It sounds like a trifle, but its absence is exactly what produces a thin white line along the edge of the finished piece.

The reason is simple: sheets are cut in a big stack, and the blade can shift by fractions of a millimeter. If your background ends right on the trim line, any shift exposes white paper. Bleed "extends" the background past the edge so the cut always lands on ink.

Fonts to outlines

The third common pitfall is fonts. If the text in your EPS is still "live" and the right font isn't on the print shop's computer, the program substitutes another one. The result — a shifted layout and a look nothing like what you signed off.

The fix is to convert text to outlines (curves). Letters become plain vector shapes and print exactly as you see them, on any equipment. One important caveat: once outlined, the text can no longer be edited, so keep a separate "live" copy of the artwork for future changes.

Vector guarantees sharpness, but not color, margins or fonts. Check those three by hand — the print shop won't guess them for you.

Why printers are moving to PDF

Despite all of EPS's merits, modern print shops increasingly ask for PDF — specifically the print standard PDF/X. And there are solid reasons:

  • Embedded fonts. PDF reliably packs fonts inside, cutting the risk of substitution.
  • Color profiles and output intent. EPS has no embedded color profile — PDF carries all the color information.
  • Easier to preflight. PDF is simpler to run through prepress checks for errors.

Most often the file is built in RGB — the color model for screens. Printing uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), and bright RGB colors fade when converted, especially vivid blues and greens. Before printing, convert the artwork to CMYK and check how the key colors changed.

Converting text to outlines (curves) turns letters into plain vector shapes: they print exactly as you intended on any equipment. The downside — outlined text can no longer be edited.
Almost everywhere today they prefer PDF — specifically PDF/X. It reliably embeds fonts, carries color profiles, bleed and output intents, and is easier to preflight. EPS lacks an embedded color profile and is considered outdated. EPS is mostly requested by older pipelines; if the printer accepts PDF, PDF is usually the better choice.
A small high-resolution logo will print, but PNG is raster: on a large format it goes blurry, and transparency and colors don't always behave predictably in CMYK. For print, keep the logo as vector (EPS, PDF or AI). PNG is great for screen and web, but not as a master file for publishing.
