How to Open DjVu: Apps for Windows, Mac, Android and Online
You downloaded a book, but the .djvu file won't open on a double-click and the system asks "what do I open this with?" Relax — that's normal; the format just isn't supported out of the box. This guide lists proven readers for every platform, plus the fastest way to open DjVu with no software install at all.
Why DjVu won't open on its own
The reason is simple, and it isn't your computer. Neither Windows, nor macOS, nor phones can read DjVu out of the box — the format has no built-in viewer, unlike PDF or JPEG. The system sees an unfamiliar .djvu extension, doesn't know which program should open it, and honestly asks you.

How to open DjVu on Windows
On Windows there are several free, time-tested programs:
- WinDjView — a lightweight app built specifically for DjVu. Fast, ad-free, with handy page navigation, bookmarks and text search (if the file has an OCR layer). The ideal pick if you only ever open DjVu.

How to open DjVu on Mac
On macOS the built-in Preview also doesn't understand DjVu, so you need a third-party app:
- MacDjView — the free "sibling" of WinDjView for Mac. Simple, lightweight, and it does exactly what's needed: shows DjVu pages with smooth scrolling.
- Cisdem Document Reader — a more serious app: besides DjVu it opens PDF, XPS, VISIO and other formats. A good fit if you regularly meet exotic documents.
DjVu on Android and iPhone
Reading scans on a phone is arguably even more convenient, and there are apps for both systems:
- Android. The best pick is FullReader: fast, free, and it opens big multi-page DjVu files without lag. An alternative is PocketBook, a handy all-format reader with sync.
- iPhone and iPad. Here PocketBook saves the day — it runs on iOS too and opens DjVu quickly even for large files. There are other App Store apps, but PocketBook is the most reliable all-rounder.
