Convert the specific shots you need to JPG for sending, printing, and older software — because JPEG opens absolutely everywhere.

The one rule to remember

HEIC is for keeping. JPG is for sharing. Shoot in HEIC and turn individual photos into JPG wherever you need them: in a chat app, for printing, or for an old PC.

Size and quality: HEIC is half the weight

HEIC's biggest advantage is file size. The format is built on the HEVC (H.265) video codec — the same one that compresses 4K video. Thanks to that smart compression, a HEIC file takes roughly half the space of a JPEG at the same quality. In practice, that means where you once fit 1,000 photos, you'll now fit around 2,000.

But it isn't only about saving space. HEIC stores up to 16 bits of color per pixel, versus 8 bits in JPEG. That sounds abstract, but the difference is real: in a sunset sky or a smooth fade into shadow, JPEG can show visible "steps" (banding), while HEIC keeps the gradient soft. More bits means more shades — and more headroom for editing later.

An honest caveat: if you're just looking at photos on your phone screen, you probably won't notice the color difference. 8-bit JPEG is 16.7 million shades, which is plenty for casual viewing. The 16-bit advantage really shows up during editing — more on that below.

Compatibility: JPG's trump card

Now for HEIC's biggest weakness and JPG's biggest strength. JPEG opens literally everywhere: on any phone, any computer, in any browser, chat app, and printer. The format is over 30 years old, and in that time every device on the planet has learned to read it.

HEIC can't say the same. It depends on the HEVC codec, which is patent-protected and isn't included in most systems out of the box:

  • Windows 10 and 11 only open HEIC after you install extensions from the Microsoft Store (some of them paid).
  • Many Android devices, especially budget and older ones, don't open HEIC at all.
  • Older software and websites — image editors, content systems, document upload forms — often simply reject .heic.
  • Printers and photo labs frequently require JPEG specifically.

A familiar scenario

You send a photo from your iPhone to a colleague on Windows, and all they get is an "empty file" — or nothing at all. That's the HEIC compatibility problem. A JPG in the same situation would have opened instantly.

Apple solves part of this for you: when you share a photo via AirDrop, email, or most chat apps, the iPhone often converts HEIC to JPEG on the fly. But "often" isn't "always" — copying over a cable, uploading to cloud storage, or sending the original can hand you an actual .heic file, and then you'll need a converter.

Features JPG simply doesn't have

HEIC isn't just a "compressed JPEG." It's a modern container that can store things JPEG never dreamed of:

  • Live Photos. A single file holding a photo plus a short clip with motion and sound. JPEG stores only the still frame.
  • Bursts and multiple frames. HEIC can hold a set of images in one file — handy for burst shooting.
  • Depth map. Portrait mode records how far away objects are, so you can adjust the background blur afterwards. JPEG can't do this.
  • Transparency (alpha channel). HEIC supports transparent areas; JPEG does not.

These capabilities are exactly why Apple made HEIC the default. But there's a flip side: converting to JPG drops all the "smart" data. A Live Photo becomes an ordinary picture, the depth map disappears. If those features matter to you, keep the original in HEIC.

When to keep HEIC, when to pick JPG

There's no universal "always HEIC" or "always JPG" — it depends on how you actually use your photos. Here's a clear fork in the road.

Keep HEIC ("High Efficiency" mode) if:

  • you value storage space and shoot a lot;
  • you mostly view photos on Apple devices;
  • you plan to edit seriously and want color headroom;
  • you rely on Live Photos, Portrait mode, and depth.

Switch to JPG ("Most Compatible" mode) if:

  • you constantly send photos to Windows, Android, or older software;
  • you print often or hand shots to a photo lab;
  • storage space isn't a concern for you;
  • you don't want to think about conversion every time.

Where to switch the format on iPhone

Open Settings → Camera → Formats. "High Efficiency" is HEIC, "Most Compatible" is JPEG. The switch only affects new shots; photos already taken stay in their original format.

For most people the sweet spot is to keep HEIC and convert individual photos to JPG as needed. That way you lose neither the storage nor the compatibility.

Editing and publishing

If you like to retouch your photos, HEIC's 16 bits are a genuine gift. The more color information a file holds, the harder you can lift shadows, recover highlights, and shift the white balance without harsh artifacts or banding. An 8-bit JPEG falls apart far faster in the same situation.

So the workflow is simple: edit the original in HEIC, then export the finished result as JPG for publishing. You use the full quality headroom while editing, but hand the world a universal file that's guaranteed to open in Instagram, on a website, or in a friend's gallery.

One important note about loss. JPEG is a lossy format: every re-save degrades the picture a little. So don't edit a JPEG over and over — better to export the final once from the original. A single one-time HEIC → JPG conversion at high quality, on the other hand, is visually invisible.
