What Is HEIC? The iPhone Photo Format That's Half the Size of JPEG

You moved a photo from your iPhone to a computer — and instead of the usual picture you got a .heic file that won't open. Sound familiar? Let's unpack what this format is, why Apple switched every iPhone to it, and how the same photo can weigh half as much in HEIC as it does in JPEG — with no loss of quality.

What HEIC is in plain English

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the modern photo format that iPhones and iPads shoot in by default. Its core idea is simple: pack a photo of the same quality as a familiar JPEG into a file that's half the size.

The secret is in how it compresses. JPEG was invented in the early 1990s and has barely changed since. HEIC, on the other hand, borrows technology from the world of modern video: the very algorithm that squeezes 4K films is applied to a single still frame. So at the same file size, HEIC keeps more detail — and at the same quality, it takes up noticeably less space.

In short

HEIC is a "smart JPEG for the smartphone era." Same photo, same sharpness, but roughly half the weight. The only catch is that the file doesn't open everywhere — and that's easily fixed by converting it to JPG.

Why the iPhone shoots in HEIC

The turning point came in the autumn of 2017: with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, Apple made HEIC the default capture format. Since then every new iPhone photo is a .heic file — unless you switch the setting by hand.

The reason is purely practical: space. Photos from modern cameras keep getting heavier, while phone storage and iCloud aren't infinite. If each shot takes up half as much, the same phone holds twice as many memories, and backups upload faster and cheaper.

Why doesn't this hammer the battery? Because iPhone chips (starting with the A10 Fusion in the iPhone 7) can encode HEVC video in hardware — at the silicon level. HEIC uses the exact same codec, so compressing a photo is essentially free for the processor and the battery.

How much smaller HEIC is than JPEG

The figure Apple loves to repeat is "half the size," and it's not far off. In practice HEIC comes out 40–60% lighter than JPEG at the same visual quality.

Let's make that concrete: a typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo weighs about 2–3 MB as HEIC versus 4–6 MB as JPEG. A couple of megabytes per shot sounds trivial — but multiply it by the thousands of photos in a camera roll and it adds up to tens of gigabytes.

HEIC doesn't "compress harder at the cost of quality." It compresses smarter — using a more modern algorithm that loses less detail at the same weight.

What HEIC can do that JPEG can't

Saving space is just the tip of the iceberg. HEIC isn't merely a "small JPEG" — it's a full-blown container that can hold far more than a single flat picture.

  • More colors. HEIC supports up to 16 bits per channel versus JPEG's 8. In practice that means clean skies and sunsets without "banding" on gradients.
  • Live Photos in one file. A Live Photo is a short video plus a key frame. HEIC happily stores both inside a single .heic, whereas JPEG can only hold a static image.
  • Bursts and frame bundles. A whole burst sequence or several HDR frames can live inside one file — tidier in the camera roll and lighter on storage.
  • Depth map. This is what powers Portrait mode: HEIC stores distance data about the subject so the background can be blurred after the shot is taken.
  • Transparency. HEIC supports an alpha channel — something JPEG simply doesn't have.

HEIC, HEIF and HEVC: who's who

Two similar acronyms orbit HEIC, and they're easy to mix up. Let's sort them out — it'll take a minute.

  • HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is the container standard itself (ISO/IEC 23008-12). It describes how to pack images, thumbnails and metadata into a single file. It's the "box."
  • HEVC (also known as H.265) is the codec — the compression algorithm. It's what actually squeezes the pixels. It's the "way the box's contents are packed."
  • HEIC is a HEIF box whose picture is compressed with the HEVC codec. When Apple says "HEIC," that's exactly the pairing it means.

An easy way to remember

HEIF is the box, HEVC is how it's packed, HEIC is a specific box packed that way. The file extension on an iPhone is always .heic.

The one big downside: compatibility

HEIC has a single but serious problem: outside the Apple ecosystem it doesn't open everywhere. On an iPhone, iPad or Mac everything is seamless — you don't even notice the format. But send a .heic to someone else's computer or upload it to a website, and the trouble starts.

  • Windows. Out of the box, Windows 11 (since 22H2) can display HEIF, but iPhone photos compressed with HEVC often also need a separate HEVC codec from the Microsoft Store. On Windows 10 you usually need both extensions.
  • Websites and social media. Most upload forms, older forums and many web services accept only JPEG or PNG. They simply don't understand HEIC.
  • Older software. Photo editors and viewers from a few years ago know nothing about HEIC and show a blank.

The good news: on recent Android versions (from Android 10 onward) HEIC already opens without any fuss. But if you need a 100% guarantee that a file will open anywhere, there's only one answer — convert it to JPG.

HEIC is a specific case of HEIF in which the picture is compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec. In short, every HEIC is a HEIF, but not every HEIF is a HEIC. The iPhone shoots in HEIC specifically.
