How to Convert Music Without Losing Quality

It seems simple: drop a file into a converter, hit the button, done. But that's exactly the step where quality is most often lost forever, without you even noticing. Let's cover one golden rule and a few habits that will save your music library from quiet decay.

The golden rule of conversion

Remember one sentence and half your problems vanish on their own: never re-encode one lossy format into another. MP3 to AAC, AAC back to MP3, a downloaded MP3 into a "higher-quality" MP3 — these are all a road downhill.

The cause is generation loss. Every lossy format has already thrown away part of the sound. When you compress it again with a different codec, that codec throws away more — and so on in a loop. It's like photocopying a photocopy of a photocopy: muddier with each pass. A real-world analogy: going MP3 → AAC → MP3 is almost always worse than making both files directly from the original.

The big trap

Converting MP3 to FLAC "for quality" is pointless. What was lost when the MP3 was made won't return — FLAC will just faithfully pack the already-damaged audio into a bigger file. You get weight with no quality gain.

Keep the lossless original

From the golden rule comes the core habit of any music lover: guard your lossless source like gold. Your "master" is a WAV or FLAC (or the CD itself). As long as it's intact, you're all-powerful: at any moment you can make an MP3 for your phone, AAC for the car, OGG for whatever — and every copy will be as clean as possible, because the encoder works from the full source, not from an already-squeezed file.

The practical meaning is simple. FLAC is your "single source of truth," from which you generate light copies as needed. A new, more efficient codec shows up in five years — you re-encode the whole library from FLAC with zero loss. But if your only source is MP3, that's the ceiling: no amount of converting will rise above it.

Start with the highest-quality file you have: FLAC or WAV beats any MP3.

The general principle: for finished music you simply listen to, 320 kbps MP3 or VBR V0 sound transparent — most people won't tell them from the source. Chasing bigger numbers when encoding from an MP3 source is pointless: quality won't rise above what the original held.

One good FLAC original beats ten re-encodings. Keep the source and any future copy will be clean.

How not to lose tags and cover art

It's frustrating to end up with a pile of nameless "track01, track02" files after converting. Good news: decent converters carry metadata over automatically. Title, artist, album, track number and embedded cover art migrate to the new file, because the standard tag fields match across formats (in MP3 it's ID3, in FLAC it's Vorbis comments, but the field mapping has long been sorted out).

Even so, after a big batch it's worth a quick check — occasionally something drops or a text encoding goes wrong. If you spot a gap, fix it in a tag editor (like Mp3tag or foobar2000): it takes a couple of minutes and it's worth it, since your player builds the whole library from those tags.

Common mistakes

  • Converting from MP3 when you have FLAC. Always start from the best source, not the first file you find.
  • Setting 320 kbps when transcoding from 128. Quality won't grow — only size. A pointless waste of space.
  • Deleting the original after converting. Keep the lossless master: it's your insurance for the future.
  • Repeated "back and forth" conversions. Every lossy re-encode degrades the sound. Make copies from a single original.

Only between lossless formats: WAV to FLAC and back keeps quality identical to the original. Any conversion to MP3, AAC or OGG is lossy compression, so some data is dropped. To keep loss minimal, always encode from a lossless source and never transcode one compressed format into another.
