How to Upscale an AI Image for Print: Topaz, Magnific, Photoshop

Your model produced a masterpiece at 1024×1024 pixels — but you need a poster for the wall. Stretch it the ordinary way and it turns to mush. The good news: AI upscalers can rebuild the missing pixels so the result stays sharp. Let's work out which tool to choose and what order to do everything in, so the print comes out crisp.

Why upscale an AI image at all

As we covered in what format AI images use, base generation is around 1 megapixel — roughly 1024×1024. That's fine for a screen, but far too small for print. A print shop works at 300 dots per inch, and 1024 pixels gives a physical size of just about 3.4 inches. To print the same shot at A4 or larger, you need many times more pixels.

Can you just "stretch" the image in an editor? You can, but the result will disappoint you: ordinary interpolation smears the pixels, edges lose their bite, faces go soft. That is exactly the problem AI upscaling solves.

In short

Upscaling is not "stretching" — it is intelligent rebuilding of new pixels. The network guesses what detail belongs where the missing dots are, so the image stays crisp even at several times the size.

How AI upscaling works (no magic)

Under the hood, upscalers use two fundamentally different technologies, and knowing the difference helps you pick the right tool.

  • GAN upscalers (Topaz Gigapixel). Two networks "compete": one rebuilds detail, the other critiques the result (this approach is called a GAN). This approach preserves the original faithfully, adding sharpness and texture without altering the content of the shot. Ideal when fidelity to the source matters.
  • Diffusion upscalers (Magnific, Photoshop Generative Upscale). The model begins with a screen of random speckles, like TV static, and gradually "develops" a sharp picture out of it, guided by the source and a short description. This yields stunning detail, but the model can invent things that were never in the original — sometimes brilliantly, sometimes not.

The right order: denoise → upscale → sharpen

The single most common cause of a botched upscale is the wrong sequence. Memorize the working order: remove noise first, then enlarge, and only sharpen at the very end.

The logic is simple. Sharpen before enlarging, and the upscaler will mistake the halos around edges and the noise for real detail — and dutifully amplify them. Sharpening at the very end, on the other hand, gently emphasizes the already-rebuilt, enlarged contours.

Not the other way around

Never sharpen before upscaling. Any noise or artifact left in the frame before enlargement gets scaled up along with the image and becomes even more obvious. Clean first, enlarge second, sharpen last.

Step-by-step process

Start from a clean PNG

Work with the original PNG from the generator, not a recompressed JPG. If someone sent you a JPG, convert it to PNG first so the upscaler doesn't amplify compression artifacts.

Remove the noise

Run a denoise pass. Clean AI generations usually have little noise, but the step rarely hurts.

Enlarge 2–4×

Set the target size for print. A4 at 300 DPI (dots per inch — roughly the print-shop standard for sharp results) is about 2480×3508 pixels — usually a 2–3× enlargement is enough.

Sharpen and save

A light final sharpen — then save as PNG. To send to a print shop, assemble the layout as a PDF.

Common mistakes

  • Upscaling "to the max." Enlarging 8–10× almost always yields plastic textures and hallucinations. 2–4× is the sweet spot.
  • Working in JPG. Every JPG re-save adds losses the upscaler will then "immortalize." Keep PNG until the final.
  • Blind trust in the result. Always inspect faces, text, hands and repeating patterns at 100% — that's exactly where diffusion models love to invent extras.
  • Wrong model profile. Topaz has separate modes for photos, art and text — pick one that matches the content of the shot.
