What Format Do AI Images Use — and How to Prepare Them for Print and Web
You typed a prompt, hit "Generate," and a minute later you have a gorgeous image. But what format is it? What resolution? Can you print it as a poster or drop it straight onto a website? Let's unpack exactly what Midjourney, DALL·E and Stable Diffusion hand you in 2026 — and what to do with that file next.
What format generators output by default
The short answer: almost always PNG. When you download a result from Midjourney, DALL·E, or generate locally in Stable Diffusion, you get a .png file by default — a raster image with lossless compression. That means no smeary block artifacts, the kind everyone recognizes from photos that have been crushed by a messaging app.
Why PNG? Because the network builds the picture from scratch, pixel by pixel, and it makes sense to save it exactly as the model computed it — without throwing anything away. PNG is built for that: it stores every pixel precisely, supports transparency, and handles both the crisp edges and the smooth gradients that AI images are so full of.

PNG or JPG for an AI image
This is the question beginners ask most, and the answer is simple: keep the master as PNG, and only make a JPG as the final lightweight copy. The whole difference comes down to one word — loss.
PNG compresses losslessly: open it, edit it, re-save it — the quality never drops a hair. JPG compresses with loss: it discards data to shrink the file, and every re-save nibbles away a little more detail and leaves artifacts, especially on the smooth gradients of skies and skin — exactly the transitions AI loves to produce.

Think of the workflow this way: the original PNG is your "negative" — you store and edit it. When the image needs to go to a client, a social feed, or a website where load speed matters, you make a JPG from it. The classic mistake
Don't edit in JPG. If you save an AI image as JPG, tweak it, and save as JPG again, the losses stack up. Open it, edit it, save back to PNG — and only ever hand the final version off as a JPG.
Resolution: why 1024 pixels is small
Base models generate around one megapixel. For a 1:1 square that is the familiar 1024×1024 pixels. Sounds solid — but it all depends on where the image is going.
For a screen, 1024 pixels is fine: an avatar, a post illustration, a product thumbnail all look great. The trouble starts with print. A print shop counts dots per inch (DPI), not pixels, and the standard for quality print is 300 DPI. Simple arithmetic: 1024 pixels at 300 DPI is only about 3.4 inches per side. Your epic image will physically print barely bigger than a postcard — and stretch it onto a poster and it goes soft and mushy.

Metadata: what is baked into the file
An AI image is more than pixels. The file often hides housekeeping data inside it. In 2026 the major generators — Adobe Firefly, Google Imagen, OpenAI DALL·E and Midjourney — embed a signed note by default — a record, called C2PA Content Credentials, that the file quietly carries to say it was made by AI, with which model and when. It is part of the industry transparency standard that becomes mandatory in the European Union on August 2, 2026.
There is an important practical catch: metadata is easily lost. Save the image as JPG, take a screenshot, or run it through some third-party processing, and the provenance signature often vanishes. Preparing an image for print
If your AI image is headed for paper, canvas, or merchandise, keep three steps in mind.
Boost the resolution
Run the PNG through an upscaler (Topaz Gigapixel, Magnific, or Generative Upscale in Photoshop) to get enough pixels for your physical size at 300 DPI.
Stay in PNG
Keep the file as PNG through the whole editing pipeline so losses never accumulate. JPG is off-limits at this stage.
Pick a print-ready format
