What Is RAW? A Photographer's Digital Negative, Explained
You switched your camera into RAW mode, took a shot — and on your computer, instead of the usual picture, there is a huge file ending in .cr2 or .nef that refuses to open. That is not a glitch. It is a "digital negative": raw data straight off the sensor, from which a photograph still has to be made. Let's unpack what is inside, why it exists, and why professionals shoot this way.
What RAW is in plain English
RAW (literally "raw," as in uncooked) is a file in which the camera records data straight from the sensor, before any processing. When you shoot JPEG, the camera's processor makes a string of decisions for you in a fraction of a second: it sets white balance, adds contrast and sharpening, boosts saturation, and throws away "extra" information so the file stays small. RAW does none of that. It simply stores everything the sensor captured and leaves the decisions to you.
That is why a RAW file is not yet a photograph in the usual sense. It is a top-quality semi-finished product — a starting point from which you can extract exactly the image you had in mind.
In short
JPEG is a finished dish the camera cooked for you. RAW is a set of fresh ingredients: more work, but full control over the final flavor.
Why it's a "digital negative"
The film analogy here is no accident — even Adobe's engineers used it when they named their universal RAW format DNG (Digital Negative). You cannot just look at a film negative and hang it on the wall: it has to be developed and printed, and how you do that determines what the photo becomes. RAW is exactly the same.
"Developing" a digital negative happens in a RAW converter — software like Lightroom, Capture One, or the free Darktable. There you set white balance, exposure, and contrast, lift the shadows, tame the highlights — and only then export the result to a regular JPEG or TIFF that you can actually send, print, or post online.
What is actually inside a RAW file
Here is the least obvious part. A camera sensor is a grid of millions of tiny detectors, but each one senses only brightness, not color. To get a color image, a Bayer color filter sits in front of the sensor: a mosaic of red, green, and blue squares. As a result, every pixel on the sensor knows just one of the three colors.
RAW stores precisely these single-color readings — with no attempt to reconstruct the full picture. Turning that mosaic into a normal RGB image is the job of a separate algorithm called demosaicing. It rebuilds each pixel's missing colors from its neighbors. When you shoot JPEG, the camera's processor does the demosaicing instantly; when you shoot RAW, your computer's editor does it later, with more powerful algorithms and under your control.
RAW is a family, not one format
One detail trips a lot of people up: there is no single "RAW format." It is an umbrella term for dozens of different containers, and almost every camera maker has its own, with its own extension:

Why DNG exists
Adobe created DNG as a single open standard: you can convert CR2, NEF, ARW, and others into it, so you no longer depend on proprietary formats and can archive your library safely for years. It is the "Esperanto" of RAW.
12–14 bits: where editing freedom hides
RAW's main practical advantage is color depth. JPEG stores 8 bits per channel — 256 brightness levels for each of the three colors. RAW records 12 or 14 bits, that is, from 4,096 to 16,384 levels. The gap is enormous: where JPEG sees one flat white, RAW distinguishes dozens of shades.
This is exactly where the famous "RAW freedom" comes from. Blew out the sky? In RAW there is still data about the clouds, and you can bring it back. Crushed the shadows to black? You can lift them without ugly digital noise. Missed the white balance and the frame went blue? In RAW you can change it as if you had nailed it in-camera — because that information was never discarded. In a JPEG all of this is already "baked" into the picture, and what is lost cannot be recovered.

The flip side: size and "developing"
Freedom has a price. RAW comes with three honest downsides worth knowing in advance:
- Large size. A single RAW file weighs 20–60 MB or more — several times heavier than a JPEG. Your memory card and hard drive fill up faster, and a burst in RAW hits the camera's buffer sooner.
- You can't publish it directly. Social networks, websites, and messengers don't understand RAW. Before publishing, the shot must be exported to JPEG or another standard format.
- It needs editing. A "raw" RAW looks flat and dull — that is normal. To get a beautiful image you have to develop it. Untouched, RAW never shows its potential.
Who should shoot RAW, and when
RAW is not "always better" or "always worse." It is a tool for specific jobs:
- Shoot RAW when quality matters and you are ready to edit: landscapes, portraits, tricky light (sunsets, backlight, a dark hall), any commercial work.
- Shoot JPEG when you need a finished result instantly and untouched: live event coverage, documents, bursts of hundreds of frames, casual vacation snaps.
- RAW + JPEG is the compromise: the camera writes both files. You can send the JPEG right away, while the RAW stays in reserve in case the shot turns out to be a keeper you want to push further.
