RAW vs JPEG: What to Choose and When to Shoot RAW

It is probably the most common debate among new photographers: shoot RAW or JPEG? "RAW is always better" is just as wrong as "JPEG is good enough." The truth is they are two tools for different jobs. Let's get into the substance — dynamic range, detail recovery, file size, and real scenarios — so you stop choosing at random.

The core difference in 30 seconds

RAW is raw data from the camera sensor, not yet turned into a picture. JPEG is a finished picture the camera's processor "cooked" on its own: it applied white balance, contrast, and sharpening, then compressed the file with loss to keep it light. In one line: RAW hands you the maximum data and asks for editing; JPEG hands you a finished result but almost no room to fix it.

Worth understanding

A JPEG from a modern camera is not "bad." In-camera processing has become very good, and in favorable light a straight-out-of-camera JPEG looks excellent. The gap between the formats shows not on easy frames but on hard ones — and during editing.

Dynamic range: RAW's main trump card

Dynamic range is the gap between the darkest and brightest detail a camera can preserve in a single frame, measured in stops. And here the difference is huge: JPEG is limited to roughly 8 bits per channel (256 brightness levels), while RAW stores 12–14 bits — from 4,096 to 16,384 levels. In practice that gives RAW about 2–3 extra stops of usable information in shadows and highlights.

What does that mean in the frame? Picture a sunset: a bright sky and a dark foreground. JPEG is forced to choose — either keep the sky and lose the ground to black, or lift the ground and burn the sky to white. RAW keeps both zones: in editing you bring the clouds back from the highlights and lift the shadows without ugly noise. That is the famous "RAW magic" photographers talk about.

White balance and color

White balance (WB) decides whether white objects look white rather than yellow or blue. In a JPEG, white balance is "baked" into the file permanently at the moment of capture. If the camera got it wrong — say, indoors under mixed light — you can only fix it crudely later, at the cost of distorting the rest of the colors.

In RAW, white balance is just a tag, not a property of the pixels. You change it during editing as if you had dialed in the correct value in-camera: the colors stay clean, with no degradation. The same goes for subtle color tweaks: 12–14 bits give smooth gradients with no "banding" (posterization) that easily appears on an 8-bit JPEG, especially in skies.

Practical takeaway

If you shoot where white balance is hard to guess (a wedding venue, a stage, mixed lamp-and-window light), RAW is almost mandatory: it removes the risk of ruining every color with a single mistake.

Quality loss and re-saving

JPEG uses lossy compression based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). It shrinks the size efficiently, but each re-save adds artifacts — the telltale "blockiness" and halos near high-contrast edges. Edit a JPEG, save, reopen, save again, and quality quietly degrades. RAW does not "wear out" like that: it is the original sensor data, not a compressed picture. No matter how many times you copy the file, it stays the same. And all your edits in a RAW converter never touch the RAW itself — they are stored separately as a list of instructions. This is called non-destructive editing: the original can always be reset to its starting state with one click.

Size, speed, and archive space

For all its advantages, RAW pays in size. A single RAW file typically weighs 20–60 MB, while a JPEG of the same shot is 5–15 MB. That 3–6× difference is felt in several places at once:

  • Memory card. The same card holds several times fewer RAW frames than JPEGs.
  • Burst shooting. Heavy RAW files fill the camera buffer faster, so a burst chokes sooner — critical for sports and event work.
  • Archive. A year of active RAW shooting is hundreds of gigabytes that you must store and back up somewhere.
  • Publishing. RAW cannot be uploaded to a social network or website — you will have to convert it to JPEG anyway.

Don't confuse this

RAW is not "sharper" or "more colorful" on its own. Untouched, it actually looks flatter than a JPEG, because no contrast or sharpening has been applied yet. RAW's advantage is potential — it only reveals itself once you "develop" the file.
