JPEG 2000 is best at heavy compression and in professional tasks. JPEG is best where it matters that the file opens on any device. This isn't "good vs bad" — it's "specialist vs generalist."
Artifacts: blocks vs blur

Ordinary JPEG cuts the image into 8×8-pixel squares. Squeeze the file and the edges of those squares poke through: the famous "blocking," most obvious on skies, gradients and smooth transitions. JPEG 2000 processes the whole image with wavelets, so there are no blocks. Its artifacts are gentle blur and faint ringing around high-contrast edges. The eye forgives blur far more readily than a ragged mosaic.
Quality and compression
At the same file size and high compression — when you're shrinking a file aggressively, down to a small fraction of its original size — JPEG 2000 delivers a noticeably cleaner picture. This is its signature zone: where JPEG is already crumbling into blocks, wavelets keep the image whole.
But honesty demands a caveat. At light compression the difference is minimal — the eye barely catches it. And when you barely compress at all — a big, high-quality file — ordinary JPEG can even look a touch sharper, because wavelets slightly soften fine texture. In other words, JPEG 2000's advantage shows up precisely when you're saving space aggressively.
File size
On average, at the same visual quality, JPEG 2000 weighs about 20% less than ordinary JPEG, and on large, detailed images the gap can be even bigger. You'd think that in the age of page-speed obsession this would be the decisive argument.
But there's a nuance. A 20% saving is nice, not revolutionary — the industry wasn't going to retrain all its software for it. And later, formats like WebP and AVIF appeared that compress even better than JPEG 2000 while being supported by browsers. So on raw size, JP2 is no longer unique.

And now the point that erased all the technical superiority. Ordinary JPEG opens absolutely everywhere: any phone, any camera, any browser, any editor, any printer. It's the format that has "just worked" for thirty years.
JPEG 2000 is the opposite. Chrome, Firefox and Edge never show it; Safari dropped support in version 18. Uploading a JP2 to social media or pasting it into an email usually fails. For sharing and the web, that's a death sentence: what good is a cleaner file if the recipient can't open it?
The support verdict
